FAQ, Treedomes general

Why should we build treedomes?
More and more people are saying that we should leave our kids and their kids a world that is worth living in. But who is asking the children themselves, what visions they have of a future earth? We hear far too little about the misery and need on our earth and the many, many wonderful inspirations which the children bring with them when they come to the earth.

What does the term " EARTH-CHILDREN-TREEDOMES” mean?

EAR(TH) stands for…
our resolve to create places where we can meet, where kids and adults are stimulated to listen to the earth and to their own inner voice and convey their visions of the future of mankind and the planet to each another.

CHILDREN stands for…
our attempt to bring the existence and significance of all children on this earth and their visions of the future of both mankind and the earth into the central focus of public awareness. And we do this with pictures and texts – worldwide in interchange – as varying exhibitions in treedomes.

TREEDOMES stands for…
a symbol which radiates far and wide. A big “earth-ear” in the middle, trees which grow together to form both a dome and a gallery for pictures which the children paint. This should be a strong creative and communicative symbol revealing the affinity between all children and their growing significance for the future of our planet.

What is a treedome made of?

• 12 trees, aligned according to the four points of the compass
• In the middle, a big Ear as a symbol (as an example, it can be formed as a bench seat) and an image of Mother Earth.
• Between the trees, boards with paintings by children from the local community and from around the world.

Why in a circle? Why a circle of trees?

The circle of trees is a real symbol of the oneness of all life on earth. The trees represent the principle of growth and life which is formed and shaped according to its own laws. The tree circles are also a sign of the unity of all children as the bearers of undreamt-of potential for the future. The connection of the tree circles to a network should serve as an instrument for solidarity with all living beings, especially with the earth as a living, feeling and intelligent organism.

Who initiated the global treedome project?

The initiative began with socio-ecological artist and architect Johannes Matthiessen (Germany, † 01.08.2015). That the children of the world should be given far more attention was a matter which has long been very close to J. Matthiessen’s heart. There is no organisation standing behind the treedome initiative.
