​Since the year 2006 there is another group of innovative young people- along with the social gardener Riet SCHUMACKER and the founder of the famous Detroit Community Highschool of Detroit, BART EDDY, who creates wonderful Vegetable and Artgardens for the poor, neglected and dangerous community of BRIGHTMOOR. They successfuly transform the most ugly parts of Brightmoor into save, well cared and in many ways very useful organic farm-gardens with kids and youth- for the various needs of the socialy neglected people of the city.
The young people express their experience with their own words:
"For all of us who labored together in Brightmoor at different locations, Brightening Brightmoor 2011 became a signature moment for the "NEW SPIRIT" thas is living in DETROIT. This "New SPIRIT" is all about people finding each other and devising ways of working together. It arises from the collectivewill of the community and finds its place in the hearts and minds of young and old, and those of different racial, ethnic and class backgrounds. It transcends the boundaries  of the city to embrace our new friends from China, India, Canada and elswhere, and it is nourished by the ideas of the Sacred landscaper, Johannes Matthiessen and the by the generosity of MRS Fisher and her family and many others"
For this work the students received the Spirit of Detroit award from the Detroit City Council in October 2011
